The Complete Game: Be Consistent from Tee to Green
Golf for Women  - Nov/Dec 2004

A good golf game doesn't require monster drives or magical chipping skills.
The key is to play consistently and to use common sense.

YES: In the correct, shorter backswing, most of my weight is on the inside of my right
foot. My left arm stays connected to my body, yet it has enough extension to create a
big, strong arc. My shoulders have turned 90 degrees and my left foot is still on the
ground, creating coil between my upper and lower body.

Go for the middle
If there's any kind of trouble around the green--here, there's a bunker right in front of
the flag--forget about where the pin is and aim for the center of the green. If you're
between clubs on the approach, pick the one that will allow you to safely reach the
middle of the green without swinging out of your shoes.

a. The short putt
Keep your body steady and take a solid grip. (I use a left-hand-low grip because it
helps me move the club more on a straight-back/straight-through path.) The key to
consistent putting is to make sure your stroke is the same length going back as it is
coming through.

b. The long putt
Use the same technique--just take a longer backstroke and follow-through, making
sure to maintain the same pace through the entire stroke. I use a metronome to get
the feel for the correct "tick-tock" rhythm.
